For nearly 10 years, our client was living in an un-permitted apartment and paying approximately $1,100 of rent per month. After the landlord stopped responding to our client’s requests for repairs, she sought our assistance. We discovered her apartment was not permitted with the City of Los Angeles and was converted into an apartment by illegally dividing one apartment into two apartments.
We drafted a complaint against the landlord and, prior to filing the lawsuit, served a copy on the landlord and demanded our client be paid a relocation fee and return of previously paid rent.
Realizing the problems it would face if it resisted, the landlord settled the case for approximately $40,000.00 without us ever having to file the complaint.
